Historic Districts and What You Can Change
Heritage Hill is one of the largest historic districts in the country, and Grand Rapids has several more. Historic districts come with review boards, and review boards have opinions about site changes.

- Replanting is sometimes part of the approval

The tree between the sidewalk and the curb is probably not yours. Grand Rapids maintains an urban forestry program and manages the trees in the public right of way, which means removal and major pruning out there run through the city rather than through you.

Tree Removal Permits in Grand Rapids
For a tree inside your property line, you generally will not need a permit. Trees in the terrace strip belong to the city, trees on contributing properties in a historic district may need review, and commercial lots under site plan review have their own conditions.
