Tree Care That Fits Belmont Properties
Belmont has the heaviest canopy of any community we write pages for, and the hardest ground to work on. Mature hardwoods, steep lots, long drives, and two rivers with rules attached to them. The trees here are the reason people bought the property, which changes the conversation when one of them has to come out.
The Rogue River Natural River District
The Rogue is one of Michigan’s designated natural rivers, and that designation carries a cutting restriction along the bank. Plainfield Township carries it as a Natural Rivers overlay on the zoning map, so it applies on top of whatever else your property is zoned.
- A 50-foot restricted cutting belt runs along each side of the Rogue mainstream, and 25 feet along designated tributaries
- Clear cutting inside that strip is off the table
- Dead, diseased, unsafe, and fallen trees can come out, which covers most of what people call us about
- Selective pruning or removal for a filtered view of the river can be approved, but it goes through the zoning administrator or the DNR area forester first
If your property backs to the Rogue or one of its feeder creeks, tell us when you call. A hazard tree and a view-clearing job are two different conversations, and only one of them needs a phone call to the township before we start.
Wooded Ravine Lots Above Two Rivers
The ground between the Grand and the Rogue is cut with ravines, and a lot of Belmont houses sit at the top of one. Access is what turns a normal removal into a technical one.
- Back lots that drop away steeply, where nothing wheeled goes past the deck
- Long private drives with tree canopy over them, which limits what size truck can even get in
- Mature oak, beech, maple, and hemlock, much of it taller than anything nearby
- Debris that has to be brought uphill rather than dragged out flat

Standing Dead Ash, and What Is Coming Next
Emerald ash borer worked through this part of Kent County years ago, and the results are still standing in the woods behind a lot of Belmont houses. Dead ash does not stay stable.
- Ash that died standing and has been drying for years, which makes it brittle and unpredictable to climb
- Limbs shedding on their own, usually onto the driveway or the trail through the back
- Beech in decline across the mature stands, which is the next wave behind the ash
- Oaks that should not be pruned between roughly mid-April and mid-July, because oak wilt moves through beetles drawn to fresh cuts
Standing dead ash is the one we push people not to wait on. Every season it stands, it gets more expensive and more dangerous to take down, because at some point nobody should be climbing it and it turns into a crane job.
Who Owns What in Plainfield Township
Belmont is unincorporated, so there is no city forestry department here. Zoning questions go to Plainfield Charter Township, and anything in the road right of way goes to the Kent County Road Commission, which needs a permit before that work happens. Trees inside your property line are yours, unless the natural river overlay reaches them.
Tree Removal Permits in Belmont
For a tree on your own property away from the water, you generally will not need a permit. Property along the Rogue River or a designated tributary falls inside a natural river district with a restricted cutting belt, though dead and unsafe trees can still be removed.
