Tree Care That Fits Holland Properties
Two things shape tree work in Holland. The ground is sand, which changes what grows here and how it fails. And the city has written more of its tree rules into the code than its neighbors have, which changes what you are allowed to do about it.
Sandy Ground, Lake Wind, and Oak Country
Holland sits on sand between Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan, and the canopy reflects it.
- Black and red oak, white pine, maple, black cherry, and beech, most of it rooting in fast-draining sand rather than clay
- Wide, shallow root plates that hold for decades and then lift out of saturated ground in a spring storm
- Crowns pushed east by years of onshore wind, which loads the weight onto one side of the trunk
- Heavy lake-effect snow that sits on evergreens and takes limbs off well after storm season is over
Oak country comes with a calendar. Oak wilt spreads through beetles drawn to fresh cuts, so oaks should not be pruned between roughly April 15 and July 15. If you call us in May about an oak, we will tell you to wait unless the limb is a hazard, and we will explain why rather than take the job.
Holland’s Tree Replacement Rule
Holland’s code carries a tree replacement standard that most property owners have never heard of. It applies to lots half an acre or larger where five or more healthy, non-invasive trees are coming out, counting deciduous trees over six inches DBH and conifers over ten feet tall.
- Replacement runs one new tree for every five removed, or a payment to the city in place of planting
- The payment in lieu of planting is $300 per tree
- A tree survey from a licensed arborist establishes which trees actually count. Without one, everything counts
- Trimming, emergency removal after a storm, and utility work are exempt
That last point about the survey is where money changes hands. On a wooded half-acre lot, the difference between a surveyed count and an unsurveyed one can be several thousand dollars. Get the survey first.
Downtown, Brick Pavers, and the Snowmelt System
Downtown Holland is not a normal work site. There is a snowmelt system under the streets and sidewalks, the surface is brick pavers, and the city writes tree standards around protecting both.
- Street trees downtown sit in raised beds and frames, planted so they do not damage pavers or interfere with the snowmelt lines
- Stump grinding near the system needs the utilities located before anything spins
- Access windows are narrow on a street with foot traffic, outdoor seating, and events
- Tulip Time in May closes streets and fills downtown, so plan commercial work around it rather than through it
For downtown property owners, the practical answer is that we schedule the work early, coordinate with the city, and keep the crew off the pavers with anything that could crack them.
Lakeshore and Dune Property Toward Ottawa Beach
West of the city, the ground turns to dune, and the rules change again. Parcels inside Michigan’s designated critical dune areas fall under state oversight through EGLE, because roots are what hold a dune in place.
- Tree and vegetation removal on a dune parcel can require a state permit rather than a city one
- Replanting is a common condition of approval
- Steep sand slopes where wheeled equipment has no traction, so the work is climb and rig
- Seasonal and second homes where the owner is not on site, which changes scheduling more than it changes the work
