Stump Grinding & Stump Removal: What’s the Difference?
People use these terms interchangeably, and that’s fine, but here’s what actually happens:
Stump grinding uses a machine to shred the stump down several inches below the surface. The result is a pile of wood chips that can be used as mulch or hauled away. The roots remain underground but stop growing once the stump is gone.
Stump removal means pulling the stump and its root ball out of the ground entirely. It’s more labor-intensive and disrupts more of the surrounding soil, but it clears everything out completely.
Most homeowners choose grinding because it’s faster, less disruptive to the yard, and costs less. Full removal makes sense for new construction, foundations, additions, driveways, pools, patios or utilities where you need the root system gone entirely. We’ll talk through your situation and recommend the right approach.
How Stump Grinding Works
Here’s what to expect when you schedule stump grinding with West Roots:
- We assess the stump: We look at the size, location, root spread, and ground access for the grinder. Proximity to fencing, landscaping, or structures affects the plan.
- We grind it down: The stump is ground to several inches below grade. Depending on size, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.
- We clean up: Wood chips and debris are cleared from the area. You can keep the chips as mulch or we haul them away—just let us know.
- You have a usable yard again: The ground will settle slightly over time as the remaining roots decompose, but the area is safe, clean, and ready for whatever comes next.
What Affects the Cost of Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is one of the more straightforward services we offer when it comes to pricing, but a few factors still make a difference:
- Stump diameter: Larger stumps take more time and machine wear
- Number of stumps: Bundling multiple stumps in one visit typically reduces the per-stump cost
- Root spread: Wide or shallow roots require more grinding area
- Ground access: If the grinder can’t get close, the job takes longer
- Stump species, age and wood hardness: Older, harder wood takes more passes
We provide free estimates after seeing your property. If you have multiple stumps, we’ll price them out together so you’re not paying a separate trip charge for each one.
Common Reasons Homeowners Call Us
It’s a Hazard
Stumps sitting low to the ground are easy to trip over, especially for kids and older adults. They can also catch a mower blade mid-run if you lose track of where they are. Most people stop noticing them until something happens.
It’s Getting in the Way
Whether you’re planning a new garden, reseeding, or just want clean usable yard space, a stump that’s in the wrong place limits your options. Grinding it out gives you a flat, workable surface.
It’s Attracting Insects
Decaying wood draws carpenter ants, termites, and beetles. A stump near your home or a garden bed isn’t something to sit on. Getting it ground down eliminates the food source.
The Tree Was Just Removed
We add stump grinding to a lot of tree removal jobs. If you’re already having a tree taken down, it’s the natural time to deal with the stump too. We can include it in your original estimate.
You’re Selling or Improving the Property
Old stumps stand out in listing photos and during walkthroughs. A clean yard makes the property look cared for. Grinding stumps before you list or landscape is a small step that makes a noticeable difference.

FAQs
How much does stump grinding cost?
Pricing depends on stump size, type of tree, the number of stumps, root spread, and ground access. We provide free estimates after visiting your property so there are no surprises.
What’s the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding shreds the stump below the surface but can leave some of the roots in the ground to decompose naturally. Removal pulls the stump and root ball out entirely. Grinding is the more common choice; it’s less disruptive and more cost-effective for most situations.
Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?
After grinding, you can plant grass over the area once the wood chips are cleared and the ground settles. For a new tree in the same spot, grinding can be a good option but is dependent on the size and type of tree.
How deep does grinding go?
Typically 6 inches up to 30 inches below the surface, depending on the job. We can discuss your plans for the area so we grind to the depth you need.
Do I need to be home during the job?
No. As long as we have access to the area, you don’t need to be present. We’ll communicate before and after so you’re always in the loop.
