TL;DR: Tree removal pricing depends mostly on the tree’s size, how easily equipment can reach it, and how close it stands to houses or power lines, with condition, tree count, and cleanup add-ons rounding it out. Because every property is different, West Roots prices each tree removal after a free on-site look rather than over the phone.
Why There is No Flat Price List
You have a tree that needs to come down, and the first thing you want to know is the cost. It’s a fair question, but it’s also hard to answer over the phone. Two trees that look nearly the same can carry very different price tags depending on where they stand, their condition, and how hard it is to reach them safely.
Picture a mature maple. On the first property it stands alone in an open field with room to fell it in one piece and pull the chipper right up alongside. On the second, that same maple leans toward the house with a power line running through the canopy. The first comes down fast. The second has to come out limb by limb, roped and lowered, with the crew working around the house and the line. Same tree, very different day, and the price follows the work.
That is why our estimates are free and done on-site. We price the job that is in front of us, so the number you get matches the work the tree actually needs.
What Goes Into the Price
Most tree removal quotes come down to the same handful of factors. It is usually the combination that sets the final number rather than any single item.
| Factor | Why it matters | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Location and access | Whether our truck and chipper can reach the tree, or whether every piece comes out by hand. | Often the largest swing |
| Proximity to structures | A tree leaning toward a house, garage, fence, or power line has to come down in controlled pieces. | Large |
| Tree size | Taller trees and thicker trunks mean more cuts, more time in the air, and more wood to haul. | Bigger tree, higher cost |
| Tree condition | Dead, hollow, or storm-damaged trees are less predictable and more hazardous to climb or fell. | Moderate to large |
| Species and wood | Dense hardwoods like oak and maple are heavier and slower to cut than softer species. | Moderate |
| Timing | Emergency and after-hours calls cost more than scheduled work. | Higher when urgent |
| Cleanup and extras | Stump grinding, hauling debris, and chipping limbs are priced on top of the removal. | Add-on |
| Number of trees | Taking down several trees in one visit spreads travel and setup across the whole job. | Lowers the per-tree cost |
Access is Usually the Biggest Variable
People are often surprised that access affects the price more than size does. A large tree in an open backyard can be cheaper to remove than a medium one wedged behind a fence, because our equipment does most of the heavy lifting when it can reach the base.
What that looks like on a property:
- Easy access. We back the truck and chipper close to the trunk, drop wood straight into the chipper, and load debris without carrying it far. Faster job, lower cost.
- Limited access. A gate, a slope, a septic field, or soft ground keeps equipment 50 yards back or more, so the crew hauls every log and limb by hand. That adds time.
- No access. Tight side yards, backyards boxed in by structures, or a tree hanging over a pool or deck mean we rig and lower each piece by rope. This is the slowest, most labor-heavy scenario.
When a tree sits close to a house or a power line, we cannot simply fell it. We climb or use a lift, take it down in sections, and lower each piece under control. That care protects your property, and it is a big part of why two similar trees can be priced so differently.
Cleanup and Add-on Services
The removal itself is one line on the estimate. What you want done with the leftovers is another. Most homeowners fold at least one of these into the job:
- Stump grinding. The stump stays in the ground unless you ask us to grind it. Larger stumps and those with a wide root flare take longer.
- Debris and brush removal. We can chip limbs on-site and haul everything away, or leave the wood cut to length if you split your own firewood. Branch and limb removal can also be booked on its own.
- Multiple trees or full clearing. If you are opening up a yard or clearing a building site, pricing shifts toward the whole project. Our lot clearing work is quoted differently than a single removal.
Storm Damage and Emergency Removals
A tree that has already come down, or one hanging over your roof after a windstorm, is a different situation than a planned removal. The work is more hazardous, it often happens on short notice, and it can mean working around damaged structures or power lines. That urgency shows up in the price.
If a storm has left you with a tree on the house or a large limb ready to drop, our storm damage removal and emergency tree services are the right starting points. Call first in these cases so we can gauge how fast we need to get there.
How We Land On An Accurate Number
We do not give prices sight unseen, because a number over the phone is usually wrong in one direction or the other. Here is how it works instead:
- You reach out by call, text, or our website form.
- We schedule a visit, usually within a day or two.
- We look at the tree, the access, and anything nearby that changes the approach. You do not have to be home for this.
- We email your written estimate, so you have it in hand to review rather than a rushed number on the spot.
- We follow up a few days later to answer questions and get you on the calendar.
A few things speed up the visit and sharpen the estimate:
- Which tree or trees you want looked at
- Whether you want the stump ground and the debris hauled
- Any access limits we should know about, like a locked gate or a soft yard
- Photos, if the tree is in a spot that is hard to reach
